![]() ![]() In sermons and in lectures, the speaker does the preparation, knows what he wants to convey and sets about doing that in a public setting, usually without any questions or contributions from the hearers. These have their place, of course, but the place for them is not the local church Bible study group. It is very important that you first understand what a Bible study group is supposed to be and what it is supposed to achieve. I chose the wording of the title for this article quite deliberately. Let’s look at a few principles and suggestions. Hopefully, this article will give you some guidance and some confidence. What’s more, you have been to a few uninspiring Bible studies and you definitely DON’T want your group to end up like that. And there is a place for sharing those things! But when it comes to a bible study discussion, we want you to implement this flow because as you do, and if you keep at it, you’ll be developing spiritual muscles in your discipleship to Jesus. So, you’ve been asked by a session member to lead one of the Bible study groups in your congregation and you are starting to sweat, because you have never done this before. Some of us tend to separate the bible study from accountability and prayer can end up being about something that has nothing to do with what you studied. These are things we want to accomplish in during a Bible study discussion and we encourage you to implement this flow to your small group.įor some of you, it won’t be natural. ![]() When that happens during small group, those can become such meaningful, even life changing times with other brothers and sisters. All those things ought to flow and connect. You see it all flows together? Understanding God’s Word, Bringing your lives to His Word, accountability, and prayer. But pray that God would help you trust Him for allowing that trial in your, and give you a teachable heart and be sensitive to His Spirit so that you grow closer to God fighting to love and trust Him through it. And the prayer shouldn’t be for the trial would go away, or just strength to get through it. You share about your specific trial, and you ask for prayer from others. Or they don’t even see how God is using the trial in the first place to grow them! If you recognize that you aren’t embracing a trial that God is allowing you to go through, or you haven’t understood the way God is trying to grow and mature your faith, then that is what you need prayer for. When we are challenged or convicted by God Word and realize the ways we are failing to believe in God, or failing to live out what he calls to, we need accountability.įor example, say you are studying James 1 that talks about we ought to consider it pure joy when we experience various trials because it ultimately God is using it to mature our faith.įor many people, they don’t see trials as a joyful thing. ![]() So on a given study time you should always be striving to do two things: So whether you are studying a book of the Bible or reading a book with a particular focus to spiritually grow in, or going through material in RightNow Media, it is biblical teaching that God uses to challenge our lives to see where we are in our journey of faith. We share about our victories and shortcomings with one another as God reveals truths through his Word to us. This is what we mean by bringing our lives to God’s Word. We often read about God’s character but often we fail to ask ourselves– do I really believe that about Him? Does my life show that I believe that about God? Or you learn a principle in Scripture or through a book, but don’t ask yourselves am I living that out? What am I doing instead? When we gather together as a small community, one of the biggest benefits of being together is when we allow God’s Word and our lives to merge. One of our primary goals in our small groups at Sunset is to bring our lives to God’s Word. ![]()
